Liquid Paper was invented in 1951 by Bette Nesmith Graham in her kitchen. Graham noticed that artists paint over mistakes on their canvasses so why shouldn't typists be able to paint over their mistakes? She mixed ingredients such as white tempera water-based paint in her electric blender and painted over her mistakes with a thin paintbrush. ( Bellis, M. Liquid Paper - Bette Nesmith Graham. n.d)
At the time Graham was working at Texas Bank & Trust as a secretary. Co-workers at her bank asked Graham for this material and she gave it to them. It was labelled "Mistake Out." As it began to circulate through her workplace more people began to use Mistake Out.
In 1957, Graham was selling about 100 bottles of Mistake Out each month. The following year, Graham was fired from Texas Bank & Trust. After that, she was able to invest more time into her business. Then in 1961 she hired her first full time employee. Seventeen years later, she was able to open up a factory and a head office. She patented the product and renamed it to Liquid Paper. In 1979, the company was bought by Gillette Corporation for $47.5 million! Under Gillette, Liquid Paper launched the correction tape and pen; adding ease and portability to the lineup. In 2000, Liquid Paper was bought by Newell Rubbermaid in association with Gillette’s Stationary Products Group. Liquid Paper is currently sold by PaperMate. ( About Us; History. n.d)
Liquid Paper has continued to create new products that meet the needs of students and workers across the world.
